UKRAINIAN "SKIF" VS AMERICAN "JAVELIN" - ANALYTICS

Recently the Ukrainian President Poroshenko says that Ukraine needs 1,240 "Javelin" anti-tank missile systems.
"We're currently expecting for just 1,240 Javelin missiles, and this is absolutely fair."
The number of 1,240 has special significance for Poroshenko. He said that was the number of nuclear warheads Ukraine had given up under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, jointly signed by the U.S., Britain and Russia.
"Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear arsenal," Poroshenko said, "and in exchange for that the United States of America and Great Britain ... promised to guarantee our sovereignty and territorial integrity."
At this, Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine is not "demanding that British, American or French soldiers come here and fight for us."
"We are doing this ourselves, paying the most difficult price – the lives of my soldiers. We need just solidarity."
"If we do not stop the aggressor, that means global security doesn't exist. Anytime, any plane or submarine can make a missile attack, including against the U.S."

Poroshenko says for The Wall Street Journal

This statement have sense in terms of performance of the obligations on the part of so-called "Western partners" but let's answer the question whether the Armed Forces of Ukraine lacks of weapons, produced by the national military firms? In general, Ukraine is a quite successful producer and importer of weapons and military equipment at the global military market. Here are pictures from the IDEX-2015 military exhibition in the UAE on 22 February, 2015.

So let's briefly consider the difference between the Ukrainian anti-tank missile system and its famous American analogue:

"Javelin" anti-tank missile system used by the US army since 1996.

The main feature of the complex is infrared guidance system, which does not activate the warning system of the enemy`s tank and does not allow the enemy to run interference into the signal. This feature makes "Javelin" very expensive, it costs 170 thousand dollars for one complex. To run the missile operator need to fix the target only one time without control the trajectory.

Javelin missile strikes the most unprotected part of the tank - the tower. Maximum distance that allows to hit targets is 2.5 kilometers.

Considering the idea of Americans to install the antitank complex on trucks, it can destroy enemy`s tank with a complex technique for distance of 4-5 kilometers, even without entering into the affected area.

The "Skif" antitank missile system was developed by Ukrainian military-design bureau "Luch" in Kyiv has already been successfully tested in the war in the Donbas.

High-precision anti-tank missile, which was made in France or the United States is 14 times more expensive for a similar rocket, which is manufactured at our Military-Design Bureau "Luch", but it is not inferior to foreign analogues on technical characteristics" - said the representatives of Ukroboronprom during the press-conference in September.

The "Skif" can hit targets at a distance of 5.5 kilometers, this is twice longer for the "Javelin" ability. Moreover, Ukrainian anti tank missile complex uses laser system of aiming instead of expensive infrared system, which does not make a shots less accurate.

The laser beam directs the missile to the target only in the last minute of flight. It does allow the enemy to run interference and detect the place of shot. In addition, in contrast to the Javelin, the gunner is located at 50 meters from the launcher and works with external remote control device.

And thanks to a special flight trajectory, the missile is also strikes the most unprotected place of a tank - its tower. In addition, the "Skif" missile breaks through 1,1 meters of tank armor, not including dynamic protection, while "Javelin" - only 0,7.

More about the "Skif" man portable antitank missile system on the Ukroboronprom official webpage

As a result:

Comparing the characteristics of the Ukrainian "Skif" and the American "Javelin", the Ukrainian antitank system has a greater range, hits a thicker armor, and it is safer for a gunner.

Both systems are striking the weakest part of the tank and do not give the enemy a chance to use a protective systems. But "Skif" is 14 times cheaper.

In general, we have to consider many factors when choosing weapons not only its high combat level, but the need for technical support and training of new specialists.

In addition, having received an order for production of biggest number of "Skif" antitank systems, "Luch" military-design bureau would receives extra means for be further developed, which will lead to start of develop more effective systems to organize new workplaces.

If somebody willing to present us the "Javelin", of course we will use it in combat actions at Donbass, and when it comes to purchasing, it is best to choose the "Skif". First of all, this is a national product. In this way we support the national defense industry. This is the most important now!

Talking about the Ukraine-US "relations" in military sphere let me tell you one short story about Ukrainian MPADS and the US struggle against terrorism:

Let us back in 2006, this time whole Ukrainians were observing the political battle between Viktor Yushchenko, Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yanukovych. Someone tried to emphasize the importance of pro-EU vector of development the state, other - about pro-Kremlin. But at the same time took place another fact of betrayal the national interest took place in Shostka town, namely Ukrainian man-portable air-defense systems "Strila", which according to experts was superior to the American and British counterparts (Blowpipe, Stinger) were destroyed as part of an international program to combat terrorism at the request of US "partners" and for their financial support. The ambassador of the United States in Ukraine William Taylor personally destroyed the last Ukrainian MPADS. The ambassador of the United States in Ukraine William Taylor personally destroyed the last Ukrainian MPADS in framework of "the event".

It should also be mentioned the recent scandal when the US Congress rejected a request of the president of Ukraine to provide the American MANPADS for Ukrainian army despite the terms of the Budapest memorandum, under wich Ukraine was literally disarmed by Russia, US and Britain in exchange for guarantees of assistance in the event of a direct attack on the Ukrainian state. Then the reason of failure to fulfill obligations became the "Nazi" regiment "Azov" ... the reason is more than absurd.
