"NOVEMBER UPRISING," THE BATTLE OF LVIV BEGUN ON NOVEMBER 1

The "November uprising" or "the Battle of Lviv" been started at night on November 1, 1918 by the forces of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen under command of Ukrainian National Council of West Ukrainian People's Republic in the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. This day the West Ukrainian People's Republic was proclaimed on these lands. 

Background: Austrian Galicia governor Carl von Huyn refused to back Ukrainians control over their own land, it became the main reason for the Ukrainian forces to start preparing an armed insurrection to seize power on West Ukrainian lands. The uprising was led by Dmytro Vitovsky, a colonel of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen.

On November 1, at 4 am the building of Lviv city hall, radio station, telegraph and railway station were seized by Ukraine's troops. Already in morning blue-yellow flags were raised all over the city. The same day the Sich Riflemen units entered Stanislav, Ternopil, Zolochiv, Sokal, Rava-Ruska, Coloma, Snyatin, Pechenizhyn, Borislav and other towns of Galician region.

The "November Uprising" caused the formation of the Ukrainian State area of 70 thousand sq kilometers. On November 9 was formed its government - the State Secretariat. On November 13 Ukrainian State got a new name - the West Ukrainian People's Republic (WUPR). However, this led to the Polish resistance and the deployment of Polish-Ukrainian war. However, exactly through the "November Uprising" the West Ukraine's people expressed their desire to be the part of Great Ukraine, not Poland's province.
