AWFUL STABILITY - WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE KREMLIN STRATEGY OF MILITARY MERCENARIES

For last couple of days many satisfied posts about the elimination of the Russian Wagner PMC (private military company) unit in Syria has appeared in Ukrainian segment of social networks. In general, such satisfied sentiments can be understood, especially taking into account that the Wagner fighter had been involved in the Donbass conflict. However, nobody noticed the most important thing.

Actually, it is not about the destruction of a Russian Army unit at all, but mercenaries. And, in fact, this is one of the fundamental peculiarities of the present stage of Russian expansionist operations, with prevaling involvement of all-sorts of "soldiers of fortune."

They perform basic functions, while the regular army comes into action only at a certain point in order to solve specific problems. As it was, for example, in battle of Ilovajsk. In this manner Russia can continue a conflict for an infinitely long time. At the same time there is no difficulty in recruiting personnel to such formations, Russia has enough of "veterans," mobilizing them in various forms, Moscow simultaneously "kills two birds with one stone:" it deprives the military budget expenses from the weight of active and potential military retirees; employs potentially dangerous personnel; solves "social problems" in the regions since participation in a PMC provides good salary for the aforementioned social group.

As we are talking about people, who are military mercenaries and who themselves well understand this fact, their death has a rather weak effect on the moral spirit of both the army and the public.

With their help the Kremlin can solve various problems, formally not entering a war. They can "spend" such units almost infinitely long, getting the main advantage - the time, having the opportunity to "wait" for changes in the situation in the world.

And from a pragmatic, out-of-moral point of view, this "system" works quite well. Moreover, the fact that these formations are funded for the most part by Russian "oligarchs" makes it all even more profitable for the Kremlin, since the money still runs within the budget, and, most importantly, it increases the connection between the "king" and the "lords."

Summing all the above, despite how much of such PMCs Russia will loose in Syria, this will has little effect to the overall picture. And in this case, the strength of the Russian military system looks awful, but extremely stable.
