#FREEMARKIV - AN ACTION OF SOLIDARITY WITH VITALY MARKIV WAS HELD TODAY IN KYIV

Ukrainian stage of a solidarity action with the Ukraine's National Guard soldier, the Donbass war veteran Vitaly Markiv was held today near Italy Consulate in Kyiv. In the end of June last year, Markiv had been arrested in Bologna - Italy - under accusation of deliberate murder of an Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli in the combat zone on 2014. Currently the accused Ukrainian is in Italian prison.

At 10 AM by Kyiv, about a hundred civic activists, Vitaly's comrades in arms from the Battalion named after General Kulchitsky an other veterans of the Ukrainian-Russian war formed a column at the Maidan Nezalezhnosly and went to the Italy Consulate office, where they had demanded fair and inpartial trial over the Ukrainian war veteran case. The rally participans also handed over an appeal letter to the ambassador.

The main requirement for Italian justice is to give maximum attention to the Markiv case, as well as to facilitate the swiftest change of preventive measure on a milder, non-custodial, as well as to draw the attention of international community to the fact violation of civil rights, the refusal of the Italian authorities to take into account the evidence provided by Ukrainian law-enforcement agencies. After all, despite the absence of any objective evidence of Markiv's fault, he has already been in prison for 8 months.

The action has an international cahracter, it takes place all over the world: in Spain, France, Italy, Great Britain, Portugal, Hungary, Greece, USA, Australia.

In the spring of 2014, a citizen of Ukraine Vitaliy Markiv had voluntarily entered the ranks of the National Guard of Ukraine as part of the operative appointment Battalion named after General Kulchytsky. Next he had been participating combat actions against armed gangs of separatists in the vicinity of Slavyansk city, Donetsk Oblast.

May 25, 2014, two journalists - Italian citizen Andrea Rocchelli (photo correspondent) and citizen of Russia Andriy Mironov (translator) died in result of a mortar attack near a railway crossing at Andriivka village, Sloviansk district.

All accusations against Vitali Markiv are based solely on an Italian journalist's interpretation of a short telephone conversation between Vitali and another Italian journalist in which the Ukrainian sildier, while in the combat zone, tried to warn his friend-journalist of the danger of staying in a particular area because of constant armed clashes and shellings over there.

Letters from the Prosecutor General's Office, the Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine about the readiness to provide all-round assistance in the Markiv-Rocchelli case investigation were sent to the competent authorities of Italy, as well as an offer to carry out the necessary inspection of the area and question the witnesses indicated by the suspect along with Italian investigation authorities. Alas, the proposition has been ignored by the Italian side.
